Cosmetology students get experience, clients get a deal


Clearwater, Florida - The tough economy has many of us cutting back on things that may seem like a splurge like a hair cut, manicure, pedicure or facial. These can get expensive, from 15 to 100 dollars a cut, manicures and pedicures around $50 and facials even higher.

Despite the economy, getting pampered may still be affordable if you use cosmetology students instead of the pros.

"I can afford it and it looks good," says 23-year-old Angela Beaulieu. She lost her job earlier this year. Her trips to the salon went from every three weeks to every three months.

"I'm broke, I have no money," says Angela. That's until she heard about the deals at pTEC's cosmetology school half off its already low prices for July. Angela is getting a pedicure, manicure, eyebrow waxing and hair cut, all for $13.

"You can't beat it. It's affordable. Even with the economy being as bad as it is, I can find a few bucks here and there to get it done and make me feel better," says Angela.

26-year-old Jamie O'Dell is giving Angela a manicure and pedicure.

"It's what we love doing ultimately we'll do a good job."

Some students are starting a second career. There's 40-year-old Shelly Brown, a college grad who left the restaurant business. She's been working full time at night and going to school during the day for the last year.

Shelly graduates on Thursday, "It's a matter of choice and discipline and wanting to do better for yourself."
